The
Greater Oak Hills Civic Association Meetings:
Notes from the May 14, 2012 General Meeting - coming soon!
Notes from the Oct. 10, 2011
General Membership Meeting
-
The
meeting was called to order by Bubba Anselmo. Rodney
Underwood, treasurer, presented the Year-to-Date Income and
Operating Expenses for GOHCA. It was noted that we have 318
paid members for the 2011 year or 51% of the neighborhood.
Several in attendance (who have recently lived in other Baton Rouge
neighborhoods) noted that this was a good response for membership,
that $50.00 was extremely reasonable for yearly dues, and that
hopefully Oak Hills would have enough participation in the future so
that it would not have to follow some of the other BR neighborhoods
who have resorted to mandatory dues for residents.
-
Projects
to be completed by the end of the year - replacement of the flags at
both ends of N. Oak Hills Pkwy. entrances and the sign-board at one
entrance.
-
New
upcoming projects - the new sign for Oak Hills Park at the N. Oak
Hills/Siegen Lane Entrance. This will come up in the future,
but requires much planning and working with the city ordinances to
have a legal sign with an address and an affordable sign. This
will be an additional expense that will not be affordable in the
existing GOHCA budget. Other issues surrounding this are the
remaining lots at that end of N. Oak Hills, landscaping the area, &
the mowing responsibilities of the subdivision vs. the city.
-
New
concerns - the speeding on Pastureview Dr. and the running of the
Stop sign at the corner of Pastureview Dr. and Lazy K Ave.. It
has been suggested that a traffic study and/or police monitoring be
set up there.
-
Bubba
announced that he would be stepping down as President and that
Wanda, his wife, was also stepping down as Beautification Chairman
as of 12/31/11. He thanked everyone for their help during his
4 yr. tenure on the board and said he did enjoy holding this
position and learned very much from his experience. He
announced other vacancies on the board.
-
A
new Nominating Committee was formed at the meeting. Head of
the committee is Linda Babin, 767-6719, with committee members Molly
Williams, Beau Wolfe, and Ellen Elias. Over the next several
weeks, this committee will be searching for volunteers to fill the
President, Vice President, and Secretary positions.
-
These
nominations will be presented at a General Membership Meeting to be
held in late 2011 or early 2012 - to be announced. Nominations
will also be accepted from the floor, and at this time a new board
will be elected. Also, anyone who wishes to volunteer for
other open positions - Beautification, Social Chair, Welcoming
Committee, and the Board of Directors (2-3 positions), be sure to
contact someone on the committee as soon as possible.
Notes from the Sept. 1, 2011 Board Meeting
-
General Membership Meeting
The
GOHCA board met at the Bluebonnet Library on Thurs. Sept. 1, 2011,
to discuss items to be placed on the agenda for the
General Membership Meeting, originally scheduled for Thurs. Sept.
15, 2011.
NOTE:
The General
Membership meeting will be rescheduled for a later date because of
the conflict with the LSU vs. Miss. State
(away game) that will be played and televised on Thurs. Sept. 15,
2011.
-
Nominating
Committee
The Oak Hills Civic Assn. has about a 50% membership for the 2011
year (318 members out of 600+ families). There were many who
volunteered to help when they sent in their membership forms and
these names have been compiled for the nominating committee to use
to help fill vacant positions on the GOHCA board. Our vice
president, Jimmy Clark, is heading up the nominating committee.
If you
are interested in volunteering for a vacant position, you can
contact Linda Babin at 767-6719. The nominees will be presented at
the general membership meeting (TBA) and also nominations will be
taken from the floor. Once the major positions are filled,
leaders can use this list to help find committee members for each
committee. The plan is to have these positions filled and in
place for March 2012.
Positions that are now or will be vacant for 2012:
- President - vacant
- Vice President - vacant
- Secretary - vacant
- Beautification - will be
vacant
- Social chairman - vacant
now
- Welcoming - will be vacant
- New Business
Beautification and new sign for the North Oak Hills/Siegen
Lane entrance to the subdivision:
The board was informed by Bubba about future considerations that
have come up following the relocation of N. Oak Hills Pkwy. that he
has looked into and that will need to be addressed by the new board:
1. Who owns
the remaining lots?
2. Will the city or the subdivision will be responsible
for mowing the lots?
3. Who will landscape the median areas? The city,
the subdivision, or possibly Baton Rouge Green will help out.
4. Bubba found out that the new sign must have an
address assigned by the city-parish to make sure that it cannot be
knocked down
without notice (as happened to the
Oak Hills 3 sign on Perkins Rd.) and that it is legally located
according to all sign restrictions.
5. How will the new sign be financed (subdivision signs
can cost as much as $8,000 an up)?
NOTE: For those who
want to know why they should become a member of the Oak Hills Civic
Association:
Your support and money are
needed to keep the neighborhood beautiful, safe, and a desirable
place to live in Baton Rouge - GOHCA currently landscapes and
maintains the public areas of the neighborhood such as the entrances
(which also involves replacing parts of the brick walls at the
entrance when they have eroded or been hit by cars, planting and
replacing stolen or dead plants, and providing a watering system for
the plants) and mowing the medians;
places signs, replaces, and/or paints the entrance signs (there
are 3 entrances - Highland Road, North Oak Hills Pkwy. at Siegen,
and North Oak Hills Pkwy. near Rue Crozat and Amiens); represents
the neighborhood at the Greater Federation of Civic Assns.;
maintains a phone tree to keep the residents informed about
important events/emergencies/etc.; pays for a neighborhood website
to keep our residents informed; pays insurance for the subdivision;
provides a neighborhood directory; pays for a Sheriff's patrol
through the neighborhood; promotes social events to meet the
neighbors; recognizes "yard of the month" to encourage beautiful
yards; and represents the neighborhood in city planning or
other area politics that may affect our neighborhood. (See a more
complete list under "GOHCA Membership" tab.)
It takes money to keep Oak Hills
Subdivision a clean, well-maintained, safe, and beautiful wonderful
place to live! The yearly operating budget for GOHCA is close
$15,000 and is used to provide all the amenities listed above and
more! Most neighborhoods in Baton Rouge charge far more than
$50 for the services provided by GOHCA - many have mandatory dues of
$100 - $200, enforceable by the law through automatic property
taxes.
We applaud and thank the 50% of our
neighbors who support the Greater Oak Hills Civic Association with
their time and money and look forward to serving you even better.
Wouldn't it be nice if the other 50% of
our neighbors who enjoy all these things for
free would help support our Greater Oak Hills Civic
Association that makes it all possible???
